CONSERVATIVE TREATMENT
The conservative treatment of the herniated intervertebral disc following the physician’s recommendation may include:
- Patient should be bedridden and remain for two – three days in a bed with a firm mattress in a supine position with the legs raised and the knees bent.
- Treatment administration including steroids – anti-inflammatory drugs for pain and inflammation control. In some cases stronger analgesics and complementary muscle relaxants are used for a short period of time. In exceptional cases, an intrathecal corticosteroid infusion is performed.
- Pulling of the spine.
- Use of lumbar braces (belts) for pain relief.
If the symptoms do not improve after six weeks to two months or if the clinical picture worsens, then surgery (discectomy) may be required
